Why Are My iPhone Photos HEIC? How to Fix It

What Is HEIC?

HEIC stands for High Efficiency Image Container. It is the default photo format on iPhones since iOS 11, introduced in 2017. HEIC files use the HEVC (H.265) video codec to compress still images, which produces significantly smaller files compared to JPG while maintaining the same visual quality.

A typical 12-megapixel iPhone photo saved as HEIC is roughly half the size of the same photo saved as JPG. This adds up quickly — especially if you take thousands of photos a year. Apple chose HEIC because it lets you store more photos without running out of storage.

Why Apple Uses HEIC

The primary reason is storage efficiency. With iPhone cameras producing increasingly large files (especially with ProRAW and 48MP sensors), Apple needed a format that could keep file sizes manageable. HEIC delivers roughly 50% storage savings over JPG at equivalent quality, which means you can fit twice as many photos on your device.

HEIC also supports features that JPG cannot: 16-bit color depth, transparency, image sequences (Live Photos), and depth maps. This makes it a technically superior format for the iPhone camera system.

How to Change iPhone Settings to Save as JPG

If you prefer JPG for maximum compatibility, you can change the setting directly on your iPhone:

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone.
  2. Scroll down and tap Camera.
  3. Tap Formats.
  4. Select Most Compatibleinstead of "High Efficiency."

This tells your iPhone to save all future photos as JPG and videos as H.264 MOV. Note that this will increase storage usage since JPG files are larger than HEIC.

How to Convert Existing HEIC Photos

Changing the camera setting only affects future photos. For existing HEIC files, you need a converter. PixFlip handles this directly in your browser — no upload, no software install, no account required.

Simply drag and drop your HEIC files onto the converter, select JPG or PNG as the output format, and download the results. Your files are processed locally and never leave your device.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is HEIC the same as HEIF?

HEIC is the file extension Apple uses for HEIF (High Efficiency Image File Format) images. HEIF is the container format, and HEIC specifically refers to images compressed with the HEVC codec. In practice, the terms are used interchangeably.

Will changing my iPhone to JPG reduce photo quality?

JPG uses older compression technology, so at the same file size you get slightly less detail than HEIC. However, at the quality level iPhones use, the difference is negligible for everyday photography. The main trade-off is larger file sizes.

Can I batch convert all my HEIC photos at once?

Yes. PixFlip supports batch conversion — you can drag and drop multiple HEIC files and convert them all to JPG or PNG at once, directly in your browser with no upload required.

Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?

There is a small quality loss when converting from one lossy format to another. However, at high quality settings (which PixFlip uses by default), the difference is imperceptible for most photos.
